A Restaurant In Bangalore Inspired By Palegar’s Cuisine
Chennai- based designer Jawffar Sadiq from Berry Bunch gave this restaurant Kritunga a blend of vernacular elements and finished with contemporary functionality.
Kritunga, a restaurant brand launched in 2022, brings the heritage and delicacies of Rayalseema Cuisine to Hyderabad. A new location is conceptualised for the cosmopolitan people of Bangalore. The Palegars belonged to the regions of South India and spread across the legacy to areas of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Restaurant has 152 seats divided in a duplex, taking the second and third floors of a ritzy commerical building.
Restaurant Interior Spatial Planning
The restaurant follows a rectilinear plan with either booth or ledge seats flanked on either side. The ledge seating allows guests to enjoy the scale of openness, while the boothe seating offers privacy. The open layout of the restaurant is minimalised by wooden frames above each booth. An arch is added to break the monotony of the space. The arch also creates visual interest and make one inquisitive about the space it leads to Structural elements are masked carefully by using a planter to, not only to blend it into the space but to also create interest in nooks and corners.
Restaurant Interior Textures and Colors
The colors and textures throughout the restaurant follow traditional and vernacular palettes, native to the South, making the restaurant feel like a contemporary twist to a Chettinad restaurant.
The Reception invites guests with a Jaisalmer Yellow tiled floor, enclosed with black tiles. The waiting lobby has a serene white ledge sofa with a backdrop of brick-red mud plaster texure, imitating the look and feel of vernacular lime plaster. Different colors of this ‘lime plaster’ paint can be seen throughtout the premises.
As one goes further into the restaurant, they can see the hues of green and grey adorning the walls divided by a strip of brown with detailed illustrations of the Palegar Community.
Restaurant Lighting and Accessories
The Kritunga Restaurant boasts of well daylight zones and the ambient light is brought by spotlights, carefully positioned throughout the restaurant. Beautiful wallscones are installed along the walls which add to the luminescence of the space and all bring out the depth of texture paint on the walls. There are also antique lanterns on certain walls which give ode to the rich history and culture of Paligars.
Kritunga Restaurant Funitures
The warm walnut shades on the tables, chairs and accessories complement the subtle and cool toned textures in the space. These walnut fins also segregate the private dining spaces from the rest of the restaurant. The hostess table has ‘Kritunga’, the name of the restaurant written in gold with wooden balusters running in the front. The designer has incorporated indoor landscaping by introducing a variety of plants such as the snake plant which bring much needed freshness at regular intervals in the space.
The Restaurant Kritunga stands true to its heritage of bringing an ancient and delectable cuisine of a community and creates an ambience which makes visiting the restaurant an experience of going back in time.
